Seasonal Effects of Diet Culture: Helping Clients with Eating Disorders Pilot the Holiday Season
November 6 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am PST
Join Jennifer Berry, MA, LPC-S, National Director of Family & Alumni Programs, for a webinar on “Seasonal Effects of Diet Culture: Helping Clients with Eating Disorders Pilot the Holiday Season.” The webinar begins Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at 9:00 AM PT/ 11:00 AM CT/ 12:00 PM ET. We are offering 1 CE hour through APA, CDR, and NBCC for live attendance.
Abstract:
While the foundational ideas of the diet culture over time have changed names, marketing strategies, and schemes, the reality remains the same – if humans cannot meet these illogical standards, then shame, guilt, low self-worth, and body loathing can infiltrate the belief system about themselves and their bodies. It invades the human mindset with an ideal way of looking, acting, and thinking that promotes a sense of moral superiority and self-control, often depleting the enjoyment of the holiday season. This pervasive sense of failure is often seen in the client with an eating disorder as they courageously walk their recovery journey. This presentation will offer insight to help clients challenge the invasion of illogical diet culture standards and adopt a compassionate stance for themselves and their bodies during the holiday season.
Objectives:
– Examine diet culture through the lens of the holiday season and its impact on treatment and recovery for the client with ED symptomology.
– Explore the impact of the diet culture on our own internal bias and external reaction towards the diet culture as well as the implications of our therapeutic work with clients with eating disorders.
– Identify strategies that support the diverse client population in challenging the diet culture influences while empowering clients to move into a compassionate mindset for themselves and their bodies.
– Strengthen therapeutic tools that embrace trust in the body as it relates to holiday interactions and change in daily routine.
