Remuda Ranch Addresses Teen Anxiety & Launches Anxiety Disorders Program!

Today, most people know that adolescent girls can fall victim to an eating disorder. What is perhaps less well known is the high prevalence of co-occurring disorders that are present when a teen has anorexia or bulimia. A co-occurring disorder is a secondary psychiatric problem that happens simultaneously. In teens with eating disorders, depression is the most common co-occurring disorder, with anxiety coming in a close second. This article focuses on anxiety.

To those in the treatment field, anxiety disorders are not necessarily surprising, simply due to the high occurrence in the overall population. Currently, anxiety disorders are the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric illnesses in young people, with about 13% of all children and adolescents ages 9 to 17 experiencing some kind of anxiety disorder. This number translates into four to five million individuals. As with many psychiatric issues, the prevalence of anxiety is higher in girls than boys.

Susan B. Krevoy Eating Disorders Program

If you are struggling with an eating disorder and need more than individual therapy but less than inpatient or residential treatment, the Susan B. Krevoy Eating Disorders Program may be the right place for you. We are a low fee, individualized, outpatient program with an emphasis on working with the entire person. Food and eating patterns frequently reflect the expression of unmet needs. Our program consists of individual, group and family therapy to discover and help you work through these underlying issues. Also included is nutritional counseling to differentiate between physical and psychological hunger, art therapy, yoga and meditation, and cognitive-behavioral groups on topics such as self-esteem, body image and communication skills. Our compassionate and experienced psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage family therapists, social workers, registered dieticians, certified art therapists, certified yoga instructor, and post doctoral fellows provide a safe, nurturing environment that promotes healing. We begin with a free comprehensive assessment to determine how the disordered eating pattern fits into your life and what purpose(s) it serves. Your case manager will then work with you to devise a three or four-evening/week individualized program that will be structured to meet your needs. When you are ready to leave the program, we offer an after-care group that provides continued support during the transition period. Our goal is to support you as you discover the meaning behind your eating disorder, heal the past and develop skills that will help you create a happy and healthy future. Our program is covered by most insurance plans and we offer help to the uninsured on a sliding scale. If you feel trapped by an eating disorder, contact us today for a free assessment. There is hope. With help, you can heal. Let us help you open the door to recovery.

Using Creative Strategies to Reach Sexually Traumatized Clients Who Engage in Eating Disorders

Melissa K. Taylor, MS, LMFT
Center for Change
www.CenterforChange.com

As I worked with my client in therapy, we reviewed once again how her efforts to deal with her sexual abuse eventually led to her eating disorder. The connection, although not logical to some, had emotional reason and logic to her. She needed to own her body, control it, and manipulate it to feel safe. Yet she needed to disown it as well, hate it, and distance herself from it, from the pain and the memories of the abuse that it held. The result was anorexia with episodes of purging. Without eating disorder treatment, her recovery from the sexual abuse or the eating disorder would not be possible. From time to time in therapy we needed to review her progress and issues that began the eating disorder in order for her to deal with the primary causes instead of just the distraction of the addiction to thinness. I have found that with cases such as these, with patients who have a history of both diagnoses, treatment is necessary, in spite of their belief that they can do it on their own.

Rader Programs

Rader Program Offers Expertise in Diuretic Abuse Treatment
DIURETIC ABUSE

Individuals suffering from eating disorders sometimes misuse diuretics in an attempt to lose or control their weight. In actuality diuretic misuse by the eating disordered individual does not facilitate weight loss but instead only reduce the amount of water in the body. Water in the body is vital for the appropriate functioning of all systems. By misusing diuretics the eating disordered individual is robbing the body of this crucial resource.

The misuse of diuretics can cause the following severe and dangerous complications for the eating disordered individual:

  • Kidney damage
  • Cardiac Arrhythmias
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Heart palpitations
  • Dehydration
  • Fluid retention
  • Headaches
  • Potassium deficiency
  • Dizziness

Rader Programs understands and can successfully help individuals who have misused diuretics as part of their eating disorder. Our multidisciplinary treatment team has developed a withdrawal protocol that allows the eating disordered individual to end the use of diuretics with the least amount of discomfort.
